The Lumaco

The “Lumaco” (‘male snail’) is a peculiar animal. People do not know much about it, since it is very discreet. It has a human face, with a single, huge ear, and blue, gentle eyes. It is equipped with a kind of carapace, like that of turtles (The carapace is a dorsal section of the exoskeleton or shell in a number of animals, including turtles. See fig. 1).

With no arms, the Lumaco has two little humanoid feet. Though it could stand up on its feet, the lack of corns on its soles tells us that, in fact, it has never done it: it is so lazy.

On its face, a short beard that always stays at the same length. The existence of Lumacos with a long beard is yet to be proven: some scientists have stated to have seen them, but have not given any reliable evidence.

Nobody has been able to understand how the Lumaco moves along, as nobody has seen it moving, despite its presence in every corner of the globe, from the North Pole to the Caribbean. It does not seem, therefore, to have a preferential habitat.

In an essay entitled Die Lumaco (published by Springer in 1972), professor Erkenwald Krause (Darmstadt, 1932-2005. He worked as professor at the Technische Universität in Darmstadt) argued that the Lumaco moved along by using a sort of natural “teleportation”, since it was able to disappear and then reappear immediately. Unfortunately, though his theory was very interesting, professor Krause was not able to provide any evidence of it, and it went unheard. Still today, nobody knows how the Lumaco can move along. In fact, you can see it everywhere.

D: Hai fame?

R: No

D: Hai già mangiato?

R: No

D: Allora vuoi mangiare adesso?

R: No

D: E quando vuoi mangiare?

R: Mo’

Lumaco’s Communication

Though he may seem indifferent, the Lumaco is, in fact, very communicative.

First of all, he can understand every language, idiom, or dialect, for the simple reason that his perception does not rely on words but on facial expression, voice, hand gestures, and, above all, on eye movements. Indeed, it is well known that all languages have these codes in common, with slight differences that make some languages even more understandable than others. Naples’ dialect, for instance, is extremely clear.

At first, it could be a bit hard for you to understand the Lumaco, but once the communication key is deciphered it can be very easy.

His laziness is also evident in this aspect, and he has limited his vocabulary to the bone, so much so that he uses two words: “No” and “Now”. With them, he says everything.

The secret is to learn which are the right questions to ask him.

For example, if you want to know if he is hungry, you should proceed in this way:

Q. Are you hungry?

A. No

Q. Have you already eaten?

A. No

Q: Do you want to eat now?

A. No

Q. So, do you want to eat?

A. No

Q. When do you want to eat?

A. Now

It could take some time before you’ll learn how to ask him your questions. When he is in a tight spot, however, the Lumaco resorts to another channel of communication: its face runs pale violet, and it becomes darker at each failed attempt, until it turns into a bright red. In that case, it’s advisable to call a specialist. The website for emergencies is tattooed on his shell.
